ArtzmaniaNG: Could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you would describe the art you create?
Crafted by Neneh: I’m Neneh Makun and I consider myself an overall creative professional, based in Lagos Nigeria. I create small and large sculptural props for themed event decor, parties, stage sets and other custom/handmade props/party decor items.
ArtzmaniaNG: What motivated you to launch Crafted by Neneh, and where do you find inspiration for your custom event props and decorations?
Crafted by Neneh: It was the need to do more! I’m a Graphic artist as well and at the time (7 years ago), I really got bored with graphic design, I wanted to create things I could ‘feel’, I loved creating 3D mockups and Crafted by Neneh sort of grew from that. I find inspiration from everyday life and my event décor clients too!
ArtzmaniaNG: What has your experience been like as a woman in the handmade crafts and events industry?
Crafted by Neneh: The experience has been challenging in terms of the lack of infrastructure available to run a business in Nigeria, but there are also rewarding opportunities; although I don’t think these are unique to being a woman in the industry.
ArtzmaniaNG: What were some of the most significant hurdles you encountered when starting your business?
Crafted by Neneh: Oh it was definitely access to supplies, before Artzmania and other craft supply stores, I had to ship in a lot of items.
ArtzmaniaNG: Could you highlight a project that you’re especially proud of and explain why?
Crafted by Neneh: Hmmm… I really can’t pick one out, what’s unique with most projects is the timelines we have, I think that’s one thing I’m usually proud of, how my team is able to pull off projects that should take weeks but we complete them in a few days!
ArtzmaniaNG: In what ways do you believe your experiences as a woman have influenced your leadership style and problem-solving skills?
Crafted by Neneh: It would probably be empathy and strength as a woman, also my attention to small details.
ArtzmaniaNG: Could you briefly share a personal story about a woman who has inspired or guided you in your career?
Crafted by Neneh: A lot of my clients are women in the events industry, they inspire me and they are quite hardworking, creative, dedicated and multitasking!
ArtzmaniaNG: As a female entrepreneur, what does International Women’s Day signify for you?
Crafted by Neneh: It’s a reminder of my achievements and journey, but not just mine, it’s also the accomplishments of other women in business, recognizing the milestones we’ve reached despite the challenges.
ArtzmaniaNG: How do you believe creative businesses like yours play a role in empowering women?
Crafted by Neneh: Creative businesses offer women the opportunity to monetize their talents and skills, it also provides financial independence and stability. I think it also inspires others women to pursue entrepreneurship.
ArtzmaniaNG: What advice would you offer to young women embarking on their creative journeys?
Crafted by Neneh: Don’t fear setbacks — each challenge is a chance to learn, grow, and refine your craft. Persistence is key and it’s always helpful to be kind.
